Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
A while ago while at the shopping complex I was having lunch with my sister and she pointed out a larger girl, who had short hair
“See that girl” My sister said, pointing to her
“The lesbian?” I said, half asking
“How did you know?” She asked me
Truth is, I didn’t. I just assumed from her appearance. I found out it was one of my cousins friends who she hung out with the weekend before at the local gay nightclub place.
I later text me cousin that I had seen her, and had said I guessed she was a lesbian by her appearance. My cousin said I was being mean, because it was “judging” her. My point was, since she was a lesbian, it isn’t really mean to assume she is one. She then said it was because I assumed she was based on a stereotype.
“But” I asked “Is it really that mean? If people don’t want to be seen as stereotypes they should stop acting like them”.
Later in the week I saw a girl with a buzz cut front and a mullet on the back and assumed she was lesbian, and again my cousin said I was mean to “assume” I mean, come on guys!
My point is, it’s hard to try to get rid of stereotypes of lesbians if they continue to look so damn stereotypical. I think that was my point. I don’t know anymore.
